Launch of new flexible MTU exhaust aftertreatment system for marine applications
Rolls-Royce Power Systems recently launched a new exhaust aftertreatment system with greater flexibility and a more compact structure. This system can be paired with 16-cylinder MTU 4000 series engines and is suitable for yachts, tugboats, and ferries. The new generation MTU Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system requires up to 42% less installation space and is nearly 40% lighter. In addition, the system offers several advantages: the lifespan of the ceramic SCR material carrier is significantly extended, reaching up to 18,000 operating hours (depending on the load profile); and the total lifecycle cost is reduced by 15%. In the future, this new-generation MTU Flex SCR system will gradually be made available for other MTU engine models.

Ships with a power range between 2,176 and 2,560 kW, equipped with an integrated propulsion system (including mtu engines and SCR systems), are capable of operating in areas with particularly stringent emission control requirements (i.e., compliant with the International Maritime Organization Tier III emission standards, or IMO Tier III). The Emission Control Areas (ECAs) where IMO Tier III emission standards apply include regions such as the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, and the North American coast. Compared with the limits of the IMO Tier II emission standards, the mtu SCR system can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 75%.
Rolls-Royce Power Systems offers customers extremely high installation flexibility: Compared with the previous-generation MTU systems, ship operators using the new MTU Flex SCR system can save up to 42% of installation space. Depending on actual requirements, the system's components can be installed in multiple ways within the engine room, including horizontally, vertically, upright, or suspended. In addition, compared to the previous-generation MTU Cube Box products, Rolls-Royce Power Systems has also reduced the weight of this new exhaust after-treatment system by nearly 40%.


In terms of flexibility, shipyards and shipowners can also benefit from the flexible start-stop feature of reductant injection—this advantage becomes evident when vessels travel from one emissions-controlled area to another. The system uses a proven active control system to continuously monitor emissions upstream and downstream of the SCR system, ensuring that the exhaust aftertreatment system operates both compliantly and efficiently while keeping the required amount of reductant injection to a minimum.
