Supporting China's Offshore Wind Power: New Maintenance Vessel for Wind Power Officially Put into Use

Therefore, it is reasonable that Chinese enterprises are promoting the development of technological innovation. One of the most advanced offshore supply vessels for wind farms in the world was produced in China. This vessel is equipped with mtu 2000 series engines, which are used to provide operation and maintenance services for the wind farms of China’s energy company, China Three Gorges Corporation.
-
The CAT-SWATH vessel is a dual-mode ship that combines the advantages of both catamarans and Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull (SWATH) vessels: it has the typical features of a catamaran, which includes two parallel hulls connected by a platform, and it also follows the design principles of SWATH vessels, equipped with underwater propellers that have a smaller waterplane area.
-
When the vessel is executing its mission at the Jiangsu offshore wind farm near the eastern coast of China, transporting operation and maintenance technicians, tools, or spare parts, the advantages of its catamaran design are fully realized. The wide bottom of the vessel and the spacing between the hulls ensure high stability, resulting in reduced motion on board even in rough sea conditions; at the same time, the ample space between the hulls facilitates the transportation of spare parts. Furthermore, when the vessel docks next to the wind turbine, the SWATH design minimizes vessel motion to the greatest extent possible, ensuring that the vessel remains stable alongside the wind turbine during the technicians' operations.

-
The vessel measures 32.5 meters in length and 11.6 meters in width, equipped with two mtu 12V2000M86 engines (one on each side). It has been in stable operation for one and a half years, with a total operating time exceeding 1,000 hours. This model of engine complies with China's C2 emission standards and demonstrates excellent performance in low load high torque output, low fuel consumption, and ease of maintenance, achieving remarkable results in the Chinese market.

The development achievements of 510 gigawatts of wind and solar installed capacity are by no means the end point. According to recent research by the non-governmental organization Global Energy Monitor (GEM), the total installed capacity of energy projects currently in the planning or construction phase worldwide exceeds 1300 gigawatts, with approximately 593 gigawatts accounted for by wind power projects.
